Hotel Kastell Dinec'h - Minihy-Tréguier

I spent a week at Kastell Dinec’h. While the hotel’s historic stone buildings look enchanting from the outside, the experience inside left a lot to be desired. On the surface, the owners appear polite, but their façade quickly crumbled when I made a simple, reasonable request: to have both sets of towels in my double room replaced.||What followed was astonishing. At reception, two staff members confronted me together, as though I had asked for something outrageous. During the prolonged exchange, they called me rude and invoked hotel “rules” to deflect my request, turning a straightforward towel replacement into a point of contention. I finally received the towels, only for the manager to come up to my room afterwards, not to smooth things over as you might expect, but to continue the argument. He lectured me about the hotel’s business expenses, refused to acknowledge my perspective, and even likened my request to a guest sneaking in a dog unannounced — a comparison that was baffling in all its absurdity. At best, the exchange felt like a debating contest he was dead set on winning — and in which I was on the back foot to begin with, French not being my native language. At worst it felt like verbal intimidation. The whole incident dragged on for nearly an hour and left me feeling drained and distraught.||Turning to more practical matters: breakfast. At €15 it was frankly disappointing: no eggs despite what was promised in the brochure, juices from cartons, cold bakery-sourced crêpes, and an excess of pastries and sweet spreads — enough to give you an instant toothache.||For a small, supposedly characterful three-star hotel, Kastell Dinec’h fails to offer either the warmth of genuine hospitality or the quality one reasonably expects at this price point. I left not refreshed, but exhausted — an experience to remember, though for all the wrong reasons.

Kastell Dinec’h looks charming, but the experience feels more like a strict boarding school than a welcoming hotel. We got the idea that the current owners are gradually improving the quality of the hotel after a take-over. Maybe we are wrong, but the upkeep seems to be commensurate with the cash flow. So, good wash basins, but no shower curtain. New curtains and heating, but an old bathtub. We stayed in the main house, whereas these comments may not be suitable for the rooms in the 'stables' part.|The main drawback was the noise from the other rooms, particularly from above. Each sneeze or flushing could be heard, which is a bit uncomfortable. The dinner was good, the breakfast was ample and the host was very helpful. We can only wish that they get on with the improvements of this hotel.

This is a very relaxing hotel. It is very quiet and tranquil. The welcome is very friendly and helpful.Our bedroom in the main building only needs tiny touches like somewhere to hang towels to dry otherwise it was very comfortable. Breakfast was very good with a wide range of local products.we were helped to find a local restaurant when the hotel restaurant was closed and had a good dinner there when it was open. I would take the hotel with me if I could.

This hotel is very quiet and relaxed, a homely place where the owners look after you really well. We enjoyed the small heated pool after a warm day visiting nearby botanical gardens. The dinner was lovely, very copious! My husband is a vegetarian, he does not always eat well in France as catering for veggies seems a lot of trouble there, but he had a good dinner, no omelette! ||The only drawback for some more fashion conscious tourists would be the decor in the rooms which could do with an update, but we had wifi, and the bed was comfortable and the room very clean.||I highly recommend this hotel if you are on a tour of Northern Brittany. Great welcome.

Quaint hotel just outside the old city of Tréguier. The new owners, Yves and Berangère are dedicated to making it a beautiful and worthwhile hotel, and your stay as well! They are very in-tune to what a traveller might need and are knowledgeable about the surroundings, having travelled a lot with their family themselves, while staying rooted in Bretagne.

The pool up the stairs was a hit with our kids. The central garden below was a nice place for a drink or reading a book. The beds are comfortable, French sizes, the bedding is high quality. During our stay they were working on upgrading some rooms, with no inconvenience to the guests.

The breakfast buffet is elaborate, with pastries, cookies, cakes, six different types of confitures, various yoghurts, two different types of cheese and cold cut meat and lots of colourful juices and a cereal. The buffet bar was a bit too high for our kids to easily see (though maybe that was on purpose 😉).

We had the pleasure of sampling Berangère's cooking on a Monday. Definitely a must try! I had a surprising starter of beetroot, salmon, shrimp and something crunchy. The kids were served something tasty and kid friendly. The dessert was a crêpe with vanilla ice cream and warm apple compote, a nice mix of textures and temperatures.

Just a few kilometers outside of the ancient city center of Tréguier, you will find the Hotel Kastell Dinec’h, located in a very quiet countryside location in the Cote-d’Armor area of northern Brittany. Although, there are some road signs directing you towards the hotel, you’ll probably need a GPS to get there without too much driving around the neighbourhood. The hotel is completely surrounded with green bush and trees, so you’ll have absolutely no problem finding peace and quiet during your stay.||||The host, Dominique, and his wife are absolutely friendly and helpful people, working with a small team of staff to make your stay as enjoyable as they can. During breakfast and dinner, there’s always someone around to help you with any question you may have. We found both the breakfast and dinner service to be of very high standards. Actually, dinner at the Kastell Dinec’h is quite excellent and probably the best you’ll find anywhere in the larger Tréguier area. There is no “a la carte“ menu, but every morning Dominique invites you to choose between two freshly prepared main dishes, either fish or meat. First course and deserts were equally delicious. We can honestly say that every single night we had dinner at the hotel, it was a real treat for us and for our 12 year old son.||||Unfortunately, the accomodation at the hotel Kastell Dinec’h does not rise up to the same high standards as the cuisine does. Of course, we absolutely love the typical and authentic Bretonne building style of the main building and the renovated stables. But we’d expected the rooms, which were quite small, to be somewhat more clean and with a fresher atmosphere. Also, the sleeping quality of the beds was not as good as we had hoped for.||||There’s a nice pool and a quiet garden at the hotel, but we found both a litlle lacking in maintenance and available service. Consequently, while we were there, most of the guests didn’t seem to make much use of either facility.||||Overall, we did very much enjoy our stay at the Kastell Dinec’h, mostly because of the fabulous food we got to eat there. On the other hand we’ll probably look for just a little more comfort next time we get to visit Brittany.

The hotel is located just outside the delightful town of Treguier. Bedrooms are located in converted farm buildings, and are in the process of renovation. After the first night in one of the "older" rooms we were transferred to a renovated one, with a walk-in shower rather than a bath with a shower attachment. Both rooms were on the first floor, with several points of sloping ceilings - so a few bumps on the head! The reception and dining room are in the main building, a minute's walk across the sometimes very wet garden. We had 3 dinners over our 6-night stay, which were good, fish especially, thought not outstanding. We had advised the owner Dominique that we did not wish to partake of the buffet breakfast and he offered us "un petit dejeuner" which we understood to mean a cup of coffee and a croissant. My partner only had coffee. We were therefore very surprised to have been charged the full breakfast rate of 13 euros for my coffee and brioche - although there was no charge for my partner's cup of coffee! The location was very quiet and peaceful. There is an outdoor heated swimming pool but unfortunately the weather was too poor to use it.
